2009 Muay Thai National Finals Fight Pics Monday, Oct 5 2009

The toughest part of being an official photographer of MAP, is choosing among the hundreds of photos that I’ve taken during a tournament.  In the two-day Muay Thai National Finals, I took more than 700 photos and due to the limited space in this blog, I have to choose no more than 15 pictures.    I’m no expert photographer and I haven’t done any formal photography lessons (except for a few informal lessons a photojournalist gave me way back in college).  Heck, I haven’t even read my photography books.

Here are some of the pics I took and I promise to do better in the next tournament.

AAK Super Karate Kids at SM MALL Friday, Sep 25 2009

Fresh from her recent passing her exam for an orange belt, RP participated in her first karate tournament.   The Association for the Advancement of Karatedo (AAK) held the Milo Super Karate Kids at the SM Mall Tournament at the Entertainment Center of SM City North EDSA on September 20, 2009.   Young karatekas from various karate clubs coming from as far as Baguio City competed in two events: individual kata and individual kumite.

It’s an age group competition of 6-7 year old,  8-9 year old and 10-11 year old.  These kids could be the future Philippine national team who will bring honor by winning medals in international athletic meets such as the Southeast Asian Games.

RP competed in both events, in the 10-11 year old individual kata and individual kumite.  Expectedly, having only started last summer, RP faced stiff competition from more senior karatekas.   By luck of the draw, RP won a bronze medal in individual kumite, her first medal in martial arts.

RP’s Yellow Belt Promotion Saturday, Jul 11 2009

After about two months of consistent training, RP passed her examination and earned her yellow belt in karate with the Association for the Advancement of Karatedo (AAK), the leading proponent of karatedo in the country.     I hope RP would continue training and never lose sight of her goal of getting a medal or a trophy in an international competition.

GIG Run 2009 Saturday, Jul 4 2009

Beck and I suddenly found a new love and registered to join the GIG (Green is Good) Run 2009 which was held at UP Diliman campus last June 28 .  This is my second 10k and should have been her first, but a few days before the said event, flu struck her which we almost thought that its the dreaded AH1N1, fortunately its not.    This is also RP’s second fun run, her first is the previous week’s Olympic Day Fun Run.

The one thing I dislike with running events is that they are held so freakin’ early in the morning.  Stricken with insomnia, its needless to say that I’m not a morning person.  So Beck, RP and I were late for the race.    When I reached the starting point, the 10K run has already started and so I have no choice but to join the start of the 5K.  Fortunately, there’s only a 10 minute difference, which means that I could still overtake some of the slow runners of the 10k.  Anyway, I could just deduct 10 minutes from my official time to determine my actual running time.

My goal for my second 10K  race is to finish it within 60 minutes.    The route of the race started near the front of Palma Hall at Roxas Avenue,  go around UP Campus via Magsaysay Avenue,  E.  Jacinto Avenue, to the College of Science Grounds,  to Quirino Avenue,  back to Roxas Avenue going towards the UP oblation, then right turn to Osmena Avenue, past to the College of Music then right turn to Roces Avenue and another right turn back to Roxas Avenue.  10K runners must do 2 laps of this route while the 5k runners will only do 1.    The 2.2K costume right is just one lap around the Academic Oval.

Since I started the race late, I had a sense of urgency to run fast to make up for the 10 minutes  I lost.    Running around UP is very pleasurable, with its tree-shaded roads, the only downside to this race is that the drinking stations have ran out of water (when I already running for my 2nd lap) and for the last 3kms of the race, I am dying of thirst.    Again, I fell short of my target time of finishing the race under 60 minutes.  My official time is exactly 1 hour and 10 minutes, so deducting 10 minutes for my late start, it took me a full 60 minutes to finish 10 kilometers.    No choice but to train and try harder next time.

RP posing with Zorro, they both joined the 2.2k costume race.

We were surprised to see MAP Vice President Andy Galvez in this race.    He finished well ahead of me in this race, well he is a strong runner because he joins the RP team when they train every morning.

Ajarn Pudpadnoy’s 58th Birthday Friday, Jul 3 2009

The first time Ajarn Pudpadnoy celebrated his birthday in the Philippines is by staying at his room and drank a few glasses of red wine.    Being in the country for just a few months, and having some difficulty speaking in English, he has no friends to celebrate his birthday with.    But that was 2008.  This year, Ajarn already calls the RP Muay Thai team and the officers of MAP as his family and he invited them to a simple celebration of his 58th birthday at Khao Pad restaurant in Julia Vargas Ave. Pasig City.

Voyage of the Balangay Tuesday, Jun 30 2009

In 1947, Norwegian explorer Thor Heyerdahl sailed aboard Kon-Tiki, a raft made from balsa wood, for 4,300 miles from South America across the Pacific Ocean to the Polynesian Islands to prove that pre-Columbian people from South America could have crossed the Pacific aboard wooden rafts and settled in Polynesia.     For 101 days he sailed and made successful landfall in Tuamotu Islands in French Polynesia.

In 1970, Thor Heyerdahl once again made a daring voyage.  He theorized that it is possible for ancient people from North Africa to travel across the Atlantic to the American continent by using boats made from papyrus reeds.   Aboard the vessel Ra II, Thor Heyerdahl  set sail from Morocco, crossed the Atlantic and reached Barbados in the Carribean sea.

In 1976, a relic of an old wooden boat was discovered in Butuan, this is was carbon dated to be 1,600 years old.   This is boat is the Balangay, the boats used by the ancestors of the Filipinos in crossing the distant islands of the South Pacific.  This discovery was hailed to be the South East Asian equivalent of viking boats discoveries in Northern Europe.

One June 27, 2009 a wooden boat replica of the balangay set sail and embarked on an ambitious 4-year voyage that will take its brave crew of Filipino adventurers around South East Asia, to Micronesia, to Madagascar and Africa.   The core crew is lead by Art Valdez and the Philippine Mt. Everest Team including Nestor Emata and Leo Oracion.   They will be supported by members of the Coast Guard and skilled Badjao boatsmen.   The voyage will be done without the aid of modern GPS systems and will rely on the navigational methods of ancient Badjao sailors that are passed on from generation to generation.   This is to prove that the our ancestors are skilled sea fearers long before Ferdinand Magellan dropped anchor on Philippine shores.

It is a shame that my family and I missed the releasing of the Balangay onto the waters of the Manila bay.  I am sure that those who witnessed that event felt proud that they are Filipinos.  When my family and I visited the Balangay when it is still being constructed, I wrote in the log book that “First, its the Kon Tiki, then its the RaII.  Now its time for the Balangay and its time to show the world that ancient Filipinos are capable of crossing oceans on ancient boats.”  Goodluck to the Balangay, may you have a safe voyage.

The balangay, christined “Ngandahig” (some sources say the boat’s name is Diwata ng Lahi, I prefer this as this is more poetic) receiving finishing touches from skilled Badjao craftsmen.

Holy Week 2009-Bomod-Ok Falls and the Sagada Rice Terraces Thursday, Apr 16 2009

“Enormous construction projects done during ancient times are either done by slave labor or done under religious inspiration and very often under despotic rulers.   The Sagada Rice Terraces…. were built by free men to be able to provide food supply to their family and to their community. “

There are two falls in Sagada, the first is Bokong Falls which is dubbed as the Small waterfall and the imposing Bomod-Ok Falls, which is called the Big Waterfall.   We chose the letter because on the way to Bomod-Ok Falls, we will be able to see some of the best and picturesque rice terraces built by the Sagadans.

Beck wants to prove that she can ride on the top of a jeep, and she wants to have a picture taken as evidence.

holy-week-2009-415

The start of the one hour trek to Bomod-Ok Falls.    We must first cross a vast, maze-like trail of borders of the rice terraces.   This part of the journey is one big balancing act.    One must have a good sense of balance or one wrong move you’ll plant your leg knee deep in the muddy rice field or worse, you’ll fall 6 to 8 feet down to a lower level rice terrace.   Since it is a vast rice field (or rice terraces if you may),  there’s no shade to shield you from the stinging rays of the sun.  So better protect yourself with a good amount of sun block.

holy-week-2009-429

The majestic beauty of the Sagada Rice Terraces.   These were built by hands by the ancestors of the present-day Sagadans.   The walls of the rice terraces are constructed from mud and huge boulders of stone.    I think much has been written about the beauty of the Sagada Rice Terraces, but only a few took notice of the Sagadans who built them.   In several documentaries aired by National Geographic and Discovery Channel about the great engineering feats done by ancient people, archeologists and historians claimed that enormous construction projects done during ancient times are either done by slave labor or done under religious inspiration.   The Sagada Rice Terraces (or you may also include the more famous and majestic Banaue Rice Terraces) was done by free men to be able to provide food supply to their family and to their community.

holy-week-2009-478

It’s a long way down.   This is the second part of the hike to the Big Falls, going down this steep mountain slope.  One false move and you’ll find yourself rolling down (and you’ll break your crown).  On the same day that we did this trek,  a female hiker who used another (and much easier) route had a mis-step and fell several down for several feet.  She unfortunately broke her shin and has to be brought to a hospital in Manila.  We overheard from another group that she will be flown to Malaysia for treatment.

We were later told by our guide that this route is the more dangerous path because it is steeper though it is shorter and is more shaded.

Imagine that the ancestors of the present day Sagadans carried huge pieces of rocks from this river bed up the steep mountain slope to build the rice terraces.

I have to commend my city-bred daughter for enduring this long and dangerous trek.

Simple Burial for a Great Man Friday, Feb 27 2009

It is not how long, rather how well you live-Prof. Randy Pausch

Islamic burial rites dictates that the dead be buried before sundown, but due to the manner of Kru Robert’s death, an autopsy must be done.

Sunday, February 22, 2009, Kru Robert Valdez, President and Founder of Muay Thai Association of the Philippines (MAP) was laid to to his final resting place as he joins is brothers and elders in the throne hall of Allah.

Sir Robert came from very humble beginnings, in his short life he has touched and influenced countless lives.  He is recognized as the leader in amateur muay thai, not only in the Philippines but also in Asia.

Farewell, my beloved mentor.

In Cold Blood Monday, Feb 23 2009

February 21, 10:45a.m., it’s just another Saturday morning in Ultra, Pasig. All members of the RP muay thai team are attending a sports science seminar in the athlete’s dorm except for 3 RP team members (Eugene Toquero, Ryan Jakiri, Coycoy Alumno) who has to stay at the muay thai Central Gym to teach some students. The President of Muay Thai Association of the Philippines, Sir Robert Valdez was also in the gym. He’s in his office located at a corner near the front entrance of the gym. The students have just finished their warm up routine when they heard three successive gunshots emanating from Sir Robert’s office. At first they thought that it’s just the sound of a large piece of glass that shattered. One teenage female student was standing a few feet from the office went to closer to check what was the source of the sound. She then saw some blood flowing on the floor and asked, “Bakit may dugo?” (Why is there some blood?). Suddenly, a man went out running from the office brandishing a .45 caliber pistol. It was Sonny “SB” Sumales, a former RP muay thai team member and a member of the elite Philippine Army Rangers. He dashed outside the gym to the open bleachers of the Ultra Football field. He fired several rounds to the air, presumably to scare off the guards assigned in the area. Inside the gym, the students and instructors all fled to safety. Eugene and some students ran to the backdoor entrance, while Coycoy and Ryan and the rest of the students locked themselves inside the toilet. When the students that he’s with are safely away from the gym, Eugene got hold of a lead pipe and bravely went back inside the gym to check on Sir Robert. He saw a gruesome sight. The MAP President is lying in a pool of his own blood. His face is so covered in bloody red that it is unrecognizable, leading Eugene to believe that he was shot in the head.

Coycoy and Ryan went out of their hiding place and ran to the Athlete’s Dorm for help. Coycoy’s brother, Billy Alumno, a policeman and Head Coach of the RP muay thai team, responded and took his service firearm. Eugene immediately ran to the guards stationed at the Department of Education. The guards unashamedly said, that Ultra is not in their jurisdiction. Billy’s wife Michele and their daughter are staying in their room which is just a few meters from Sir Robert’s office. She entered the backdoor entrance of the office to check the source of the gunshots and saw Sir Robert’s blood soaked body lying on the floor near the front door. She immediately covered the eyes of her daughter and ran for safety.

Minutes later, members of the Pasig City SWAT team from the police station in front of DepEd arrived in the crime scene and secured the perimeter. Billy together with the SWAT and other policemen scoured the bleachers and all the offices under it searching for Sumales. Unfortunately, he has already escaped.

11:20a.m. , me and my daughter are on our way to her Kumon Class. We’re already at Julia Vargas Ave., which is just less than 1km from Ultra, when my mobile phone rang. It was Jay Alcantara, a fellow muay thai kru. He broke to me the appalling news. Sir Robert was shot in the gym and was brought to a nearby hospital. He fears that Sir Robert is already dead on arrival. Still in shock, I dropped my daughter to her Kumon Class and immediately proceeded to Ultra.

At the gym, two policemen were securing the scene of the crime. I introduced myself as an officer of MAP and showed my ID. They allowed me to enter Sir Robert’s room. What I saw, is so surreal. A pool of blood is splattered on the floor near the front door entrance of the President’s office. The blood has already solidified that I thought its human flesh. Sir Robert’s office table was moved out of its place, apparently pushed by him when he tried to run towards the door. Large drops of blood are on the office table, on the white ceramic floor and then on the front door. Signs that Sir Robert was shot while sitting beside his table and tried to call for help. He fell from the bullet wounds before reaching the front door.

I then headed to the Athlete’s Dorm to check on the RP team. On the way, I saw Michele and her daughter sitting on the Oval Track’s grand stand. She narrated about hearing the gun shots and seeing Sir Robert lying on the floor. It is Michele who first told me that the gunman who did this heartless murder is Sonny Sumales. I am aware that Sumales have some issues against Sir Robert but I didn’t know that it will lead to this. Sumales and I are on very good terms and in fact, he was my cornerman when I fought in muay thai last August. In fact, we greeted each other just the night before he did this crime.

Ajarn Pudpadnoy, the Thai Coach of the RP team, fetched me at the Grand Stand and accompanied me to the athlete’s dorm. I advised the rest of the team to stay put in the dorm and as much as possible, not to go at the gym because it is enclosed for being a scene of the crime. Ajarn and I then proceeded to The Medical City in Ortigas Ave. where Sir Robert was brought.

At the entrance of the Emergency Room of Medical City, Kru Billy was sitting on the pavement, shirtless and his head bowed. When he saw us, he gestured that Sir Robert’s gone. Just then, Ate Grace, Sir Robert’s wife went out of the Emergency Room and approached me. She has not yet finished what she has to say, I instantaneously embraced her. With the loss of a friend, a big brother and a mentor, I could not hold back and cried at the shoulder of Ate Grace. I think I cried in the same manner and outburst when I lost my mother two years ago.

Ate Grace led us to the room where Sir Robert was brought. Inside, his lifeless body was lying covered by a blanket on a hospital bed. Sticky blood still dripping from the gunshot wounds onto the floor. A very brave woman, Ate Grace showed me all of Sir Robert’s wounds. Two bullets found its target in the upper arm area. The third and fatal shot hit Sir Robert’s side, just under the arm pit. This bullet pierced his heart.

Everybody in the room, Sir Zapata (another coach of the RP team), Sir Billy, Sir Roy (former RP team member and now member of the elite Special Action Force), Ajarn Pudpadnoy and I are all staring blankly at Sir Robert’s blood soaked body. Sir Billy was asking Sir Robert, why did he left us…with so many plans in line…with so many dreams unfulfilled…all of which is the growth of muay thai and for the welfare of the athletes.

Ate Grace walked into the room and asked me a favor. She has no money to settle the hospital bills. If she can’t pay, we will not be able to bring out Sir Robert’s body. Without a moment’s hesitation, I took out my credit card and we headed for the cashier. The bill totaled Php28,000, a small price to repay a man whom I look up to as one of my mentors.

Another dilemma presented itself to Ate Grace. Islamic rites (Sir Robert is a Muslim) dictates that the dead be buried before sunset, while the NBI want to do an autopsy. Her mind was cleared when actor Robin Padilla, a blood brother of Sir Robert, came. Robin explained that Sir Robert can be buried the following day so the autopsy can be done, as long as the body will not be embalmed. The challenge now is to find a funeral home with a freezer. Fortunately, Heritage Park has one and its not too far from Medical City, from Ultra and from Maharlika, Taguig where a Mosque is located.

Then another and much bigger challenge came. How will Ate Grace tell her three children, aged between 13 and 10, that their beloved father is already dead. Mercilessly killed by a man who he has helped in countless ways. All three children arrived around 2p.m. , still oblivious about the fate of their father. The middle child, Robert Jr. was still smiling at her mom and looked very happy to see her. Trying to fight her emotions, Ate Grace informed her children that their father has just died. But with all strength that she can muster, she bravely told them that life would still go on for them. That the dreams their father has planned for them would continue. She will find a job and all of the children would keep on studying. She reminded her kids all of the lessons their father has thought them. At that moment, Ate Grace is the portrait…the personification…the epitome of a woman’s strength.

At around 3p.m., Sir Robert’s body was transferred to Heritage Park in Fort Bonifacio, Taguig. He was put in a freezer while we waited for the forensic team from NBI to arrive for the autopsy. At around 7p.m., the NBI has finished their findings. Sir Robert was shot at close range, at no more than 3 feet away. Two bullets ripped through his left upper arm, just below the deltoid area, and penetrated his torso. One bullet punctured his chest while another found it’s mark in the liver. The third and most fatal shot entered just below the armpit and pierced through his heart.

Collecting and comparing the accounts of Ryan Jakiri, Eugene Toquero, Michele, NBI’s finding and my own observation of the crime scene, here perhaps, how the cold blooded murder was carried out and what is the motive for this senseless crime.

Knowing that there are students inside the gym, Sumales might have entered through the lower entrance of the bleacher and went up the stairs to the Sir Robert’s office. He entered the office through the unfinished conference room which is adjacent to the President’s office. The door from the conference room is just beside Sir Robert’s office table. Sir Robert is talking to a Muslim brother on his mobile phone when Sumales entered the room and fired three successive shots. Sir Robert is holding the mobile phone using his left hands, which is why the first 2 bullets hit the upper arm. The person whom Sir Robert was talking to heard the gunshot and heard him uttered “aaaakkk” in a very guttural manner. Sir Robert dropped the phone and tried to make his way to the front door to call for help. He fell down before reaching the door.

Sumales is jokingly called as a lunatic by his team mates for making statements that are often nonsense. He is in love with another RP team member and 2005 SEA Games Gold Medalist Cristina Custodio, who is just half Sumales’ age. Sumales is wooing Cristina to the point of harassing her that the pretty lass’ parents sought the help of Sir Robert. Last week, Sir Robert and Sir Billy talked to Sumales and told him to stop harassing Cristina. This might have led Sumales to snap and carry out this gruesome murder.

Sir Robert has told me that he has made a lot of enemies and some of whom have made threats to his life. I never thought that he will be killed for a reason so insignificant that its senseless by someone whom he has helped before. It was Sir Robert who recommended Sumales to the Army Ranger school in Camp Capinpin.

At around 11p.m., we brought Sir Robert’s body to the Blue Mosque in Maharlika Road, Taguig where his body will be consecrated in Islamic rites for burial at 11a.m. the following day. A few minutes later, Beck, Ajarn Pudpadnoy and I headed home pondering on the future of three young and innocent children who will grow up without a father, contemplating on the burden left to a wife who has to raise her children alone and worried about the future of the Philippine Muay Thai team who has lost a leader.
